It's an occasion to wear your most fetching attire and, if luck is with you, to see racing records broken and win a little money for yourself.

Meanwhile, that same year, Long Run, a promising six-year-old, set a new record in the prestigious Gold Cup when he won in a 6m 29.7sec run.

Having a Good Bet
You really should have a good, long look at the horses competing in the races on each day before you have your first bet. When you're ready, there are a multitude of Cheltenham betting offers for online and on-site bet placement, but it's strongly recommended that you shop around before making any final decisions.
Three Ways of Betting at the Cheltenham Races
1. The Tote
Cheltenham does provide access to Britain's only bookmaker permitted to offer a parimutuel betting on horse races, the Tote. Totepool betting points may be spotted all around the racecourse grounds. This includes points at most of the dining and hospitality accommodations.
There are many ways to have a good bet through the Tote. Here are your choices for wagers: Win, Place, Exacta, Trifecta, Quadpot, Placepot, Jackpot, Scoop6, and Swinger.
2. The Betting Ring
Cheltenham races betting offers two main betting rings for your convenience. One is located in front of the Tattersalls and the other can be found in front of the Best Mate Grandstands. Before making a wager in either ring, be sure to compare bookmakers' odds to find your best bet. Bookmakers can be easily found in these areas.
Placing a Bet
You simply need to call out your favored pick's number and your stake to the bookmaker who will repeat it back to you. When you confirm your bet's correctness, you give the bookmaker your stake, and then you will receive a ticket receipt detailing the items of your bet and any winnings due. Be certain the information on the ticket is right and alert the bookmaker of any errors. Keep the ticket in a safe place, then, if your horse wins, return the ticket to the bookmaker to retrieve your rewards.
DO NOT destroy the ticket until after you've heard the "Weighed In" announcement. Even though your horse may not have won, a Steward's Enquiry may be conducted and wins or places could be invalidated, meaning you may end up a winner, after all.
Betting Ring Bet Types
There are two ways to win in the rings. One is to bet to Win, which means your horse must win, obviously. The second is to place an Each Way bet. This is basically two bets in one; one for Win and one for Place, which does allow you a greater chance of success.
3. The Betfred Betting Shops
There are three Betfred Betting Shops at Cheltenham, located close to the parade ring, near the Centaur, and in the Best Mate area. These shops offer all the usual bets found in any high street betting shop, including chances at Cheltenham races betting.
